Not only are these lighter than the Serfas I've been using for years (although they're good for half as much $$), but they roll easier, don't need a liner to prevent flats, but they also have a reflective strip to make me more visible in traffic. The tread (what little there is) is great for pavement and rails-to-trails, ok for hard-packed dry dirt trails, but totally useless in wet and muddy dirt trails. Every tire is a trade-off (great on roads OR trails, never both), but if you're commuting around town and only on flat grass and dirt for shot cuts, this is great. If you need more side knobs on slightly more technical paths, look at a few other Marathon models (ie Hurricane HS or Marathon Plus). This tire will take more pressure than many 2.0" tires. This means you'll get more speed and less chance of a pinch-flat if you hit a pot hole but can add a bit... They might be the nicest, most secure-feeling road tires I've had on my old mountain bike. -No flats so far. Never ridden this far on any tires without a flat. -Durable tread. The front took a couple hundred miles for the center rubber ridge on the tire to wear off. And a few bad things that add up to a diagnosis of 'not very robust' and 'needs superglue': -That super grippy rubber also gets cut up like crazy by road or trail debris. I've superglued a number of large cuts back together. -The reflective sidewall stripe began peeling off immediately on one tire - superglue -... My main set up is an old Jamis mountain bike that had knobby tires on it, so in order to make it more fun to ride, and more economical I decided to get a tire with less resistance. I chose these and was very satisfied. My average speed went from 14-16 mph to 18-22 mph instantly which was a great upgrade on speed. the main selling point for me was these tires have extra flat protection which gives me more comfort knowing that I have extra protection without all the extra weight armadillos give.Unfortunately, on a four hour expedition with my pop, the rear tire gave out suddenly, and when changing it we assumed it was just a bad inner tube. But once we inflated the tire we realized that the seem between the sidewall and tread had somehow given out (keep in mind this is with less than a hundred miles on them) and the tube started to bubble out. I was pretty disappointed about this because it made me question the... Read more |
