I owned platform pedals when I first got my mountain bike...then I got clipless pedals which I love, but kids came along and now want to go ride bikes together. These pedals were the answer for me! I can clip in (on either side)when I'm excercising or riding technical track or hop on with the kids with my sandals for a joy ride. Oh...another thing is when you're approaching a part of the trail where you know you might stumble, you can clip out beforehand and still pedal comfortably on the platform so you can put that outrigger foot down quickly!

The Shimano SPD Mountain/BMX Bike Pedal M647 is a nice compromise in versatility and efficiency. A DUAL FUNCTION PEDAL it is plenty strong for a heavier rider and its light platform provides for greater safety in rough terrain as a rider can be clipped out and yet still have control. I've extensively used several pairs of shimano clipless pedals. These particular pedals work great and all of the metal in them works perfectly and has great longevity and durability. However! the plastic cage breaks rather easily. Supposedly they are replaceable, but I have not found the replacements. if you're using these for mountain biking or they might otherwise strike rocks, go with the 545's. I own those too and they work quite well.
